What you should keep in mind

Anaesthesia:
local with sedation or general
Length of operation:
1 to 2 hours
Patient status:
outpatient or overnight
Side effects:
swelling, tension, temporarily reduced sensitivity of the nipple-areola complex, restriction of the movements of the arms
Recovery:
back to work: 1 week
Result:
lasting

Glandular hypertrophy during childhood and adolescence are harmless and resolve spontaneously. In adulthood, it is sometimes sufficient to stop a medication that leads to gynecomastia (corticosteroids and/or anabolic steroids).

The operation

In most cases, a small incision at the inferior border of the areola is sufficient. The superfluous glandular tissue is resected and the nipple-areola complex remains intact. In excessive forms of gynecomastia, it can become necessary to perform extensive incisions to sufficiently remove the superfluous breast tissue and skin.

In cases where gynecomastia is mainly due to fat tissue, the tissue can be suctioned without any further operative interventions.
